The day started off with excitement for JR Nation, who were preparing for a somewhat dominating run after Dale Earnhardt Jr. had run fast in practice all weekend and sat on the pole by recording the fastest qualifying lap in the history of NASCAR’s new car of tomorrow.
However, that’s not the way it happened for Earnhardt.
Mark Martin, driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, was quickest in Saturday’s Final Sprint Cup Series practice session. His teammate and polesitter for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 was second quickest.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. says his strong qualifying performances to start the season should soon translate to success on race day.
Turning in the fastest lap ever in qualifying for the Car Of Tomorrow, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from the pole for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500. The pole is his first in nearly two years.
